BEACH CLEANUP NEAR ME SERIES
The Lakeshore Cleanup Coalition will continue to work together beyond the scope of the grant to ensure that cleanup events and outreach efforts continue throughout West Michigan.Ī series of virtual talks were held earlier this year. As events are completed, we will also report the results.
BEACH CLEANUP NEAR ME FULL
Each partner will organize and run their own events and the MACC will post the full list with registration links. With support of the EPA grant, the Lakeshore Cleanup Coalition will hold volunteer beach and river cleanups throughout Ottawa and Allegan County through the summer of 2022. Collectively, these partners formed a group that we call the Lakeshore Cleanup Coalition. This project is in partnership with Ottawa County Parks and Recreation, the Ottawa Conservation District, Hope College, the ODC Network, the Allegan Conservation District, and the Kalamazoo River Watershed Council. Regardless, it will definitely become part of a "plastic soup" that chokes, degrades, and pollutes ecosystems to further harm wildlife.The US Environmental Protection Agency awarded a grant to the MACC in summer 2020 to support beach and river cleanups in Ottawa and Allegan Counties.
Once plastic enters the water, it might be ingested by animals like whales, dolphins, sea turtles, and fish. Plastic doesn't break down, it only breaks up into smaller, and smaller pieces. We will provide supplies (reusable trash bags, trash pickers, etc.) all you need to bring is masks and gloves!!Įvery time you see trash on the ground (sidewalk, parking lot, roadway, beach, etc…), unless someone picks it up and properly throws it away, that piece of trash, such as a plastic bottle or bag, will make its way to a wetland, estuary and/or ocean. It is preferable to use a trash picker during cleanups if possible. Remember: While keeping the beach clean, safety tips to bear in mind are to check tide times, watch out for sharp objects and potentially hazardous waste, and wear protective gloves where necessary. Beware of items like broken glass, sharp items, etc., which are occasionally found during a cleanup. Pick up litter that you can safely handle and lift. No Flip-Flops! We recommend wearing boots, hip boots or waders that can get both wet and dirty. Wash hands thoroughly (20+ seconds) after the cleanup.ĭo not touch another volunteer or person before, during or after the cleanup. Smiles, peace signs and words of encouragement are always most welcome.įrequent hand-washing / use of hand sanitizer during and after the cleanup.ĭo not touch your face during the cleanup. Please bring a face mask and kindly wear it if social distancing is not possible. We have picked up over 6500 plastic water bottles and caps, tens of thousands of pieces of micro plastic, and thousands of other various pieces of marine debris.
We require that volunteers wear a face-mask or face covering that covers your nose and mouth for the duration of the cleanup if you have not been vaccinated. Since 2017, Beach Relief has conducted over 830 beach clean ups, resulting in over 8 tons (15,000 lbs) of plastic and debris being removed from our beaches and oceans.
